The Upcoming Feast for Johnny Depp Fans
Johnny Depp fans have a lot to look forward to in 2014 even if the year has just a few months left. The star’s ‘Into the Woods’ is releasing on Christmas this year in which he will star alongside Hollywood stalwart Meryl Streep. The Disney adaptation of the Broadway musical directed by Rob Marshall brings to life many of the fairytale characters from the Grimm Brothers stories including Rapunzel, Cinderella and The Little Red Riding Hood. Depp plays the character of The Wolf in the story of Little Red Riding Hood. Though his part is still being kept under wraps with just a minor glimpse of him in the trailers it will be certainly fun to watch him in the big bad wolf costume. January 2015 will see the release of Depp’s next movie ‘Mortdecai’ in which he plays Charles Mortdecai an English art dealer in search of a stolen painting which will lead Nazi gold. The movie is a comedy –action thriller where much of the laughs will be garnered by Depp’s physical comedy and portrayal of a clueless and oblivious but charming art dealer. Gwyneth Paltrow and Olivia Munn will play the female lead characters. The movie will see Johnny Depp in an out and out comedy role after a long time since The Pirates of the Caribbean – Fountain of Youth. This might excite the audience about him again after the debacle of his last two movies ‘The Dark Shadows’ and ‘The Lone Ranger.’
The next movie Depp will be seen is in ‘Yoga Hosers’ in June 2015 directed by Kevin Smith. The movie is a spin-off of Kevin Smith’s 2014 horror movieTusk. It’s an action adventure film which also marks the movie debut of Depp’s daughter Lily- Rose Depp who plays one of the lead characters in the movie. In the movie Depp plays the legendary man-hunter from Montreal named Guy Lapointe. The movie has been dubbed by many as a comic book movie because of director Kevin Smith’s obsession with comic books and the dynamic between superheroes and villains.
September 2015 has also been announced as the tentative date of release for Warner Bros. biopic of Whitey Bulger with Depp in the role of Bulger. The movie is as of yet untitled but is based on the book “Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance between the FBI and the Irish Mob,” written by Boston Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill. Depp had earlier dropped out of the project over money issues but has since returned after Warner Bros. took over production. Depp plays the ruthless Boston mobster Whitey Bulger in the movie which spans over the rise and fall of the Boston Winter Hill Gang. Benedict Cumberbatch of the Sherlock Holmes fame plays his brother in the movie.
Disney has announced that it will release the sequel of Tim Burton’s hit movie ‘Alice in Wonderland’ titled ‘Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass’ in 2016. The studio wanted to release the movie earlier but much time was spent in negotiations. But this time Burton will be replaced with ‘Muppets’ director James Bobbin who has already took over his new role. Johnny Depp will be reprising his role as the eccentric Mad Hatter in the sequel with Alice herself played again by Mia Wasikowska. Depp in the first movie has lent a certain sinister shade to the character of Mad Hatter a trademark of the union of Tim Burton and Depp himself, but it is left to be seen if James Bobbin can bring the same dark characterizations to the theme and narrative of the sequel.
And finally the much awaited Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales has been announced to be released in June 2017 instead of 2015 as a result of the script being incomplete. Johnny Depp will reprise the role of pirate Jack Sparrow one of the most recognizable characters of his career. The character which has also inspired thousands of Halloween costumes since the first movie came out in 2003. This time the director duo Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg will be at the helm of the project. But it is said that this time around the movie will face a lot of competition as ‘Despicable Me:3’ and ‘Justice League’ will be released around the same time. Though the American audience has lost interest in the Pirates series it still garners a lot of attention in foreign markets, though it’s been said that Depp is beating a dead horse and reprising a character which should have been put to bed about two movies back.
